« He remains one of the favorite actors of the movie buff, as much for his uncommon and paradoxical charm as for his electrifying personality. Moreover, Widmark has many times crossed the path of great moviemakers and he even managed to insufflate some vigour to mediocre directors. He is the perfect embodiment of America torn apart by McCarthyism and the Cold War, tottering between brutal primitivism (No Way Out) and humanism (The Cobweb), between anti-communism (primary in Pickup on South Street or more ambiguous in The Bedford Incident) and a generous Democracy (Twilight Last Gleaming Nuclear Countdown) . He will forever embody the face of a schizophrenic America."
This comment, made by Christian Viviani about the actor Richard Widmark in the excellent article (« Richard Widmark – Udo and his shadow ») he wrote in the movie magazine POSITIF (july-august 1995) perfectly summarizes Widmark’s immense contribution not only to the american cinema, but to cinema in general.
